TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY FASHION 

American teenagers have a big influence on the U.S fashion industry.  Many of them have a part-time job or get money from their parents, so teens buy a lot of clothes.

Without teeneagers, many clothing companies wouldn’t exist. 

Celebrities who are popular with teens have the biggest influence on fashion trends. Think of performances such as Britney Spears, sports personalities such as Anna Kurnilova, and a rap/hip-hop artist such as  Jay-Z. 

Low rise jeans with a very short top (a “belly shirt”) are popular, thanks to Britney Spears and Anna Kurnikova. 

The gangster look-big, baggy pants; over-sized T-shirts or sweatshirts; and baseball caps-is popular, because of rappers. Punk fashion,  which became a trend again 1996, features combat boots, old Converse® shoes, tight leader pants, ripped T-shirts ,and spiked jewelry.

 Boho-chic (boho for bohemian and chic meaning fashionable) is mainly from the mind 2000s. a boho-chic outfit may include long flowing skirts, wide belts, sheepskin boots or cowboy boots, baggy sweaters, and hobo bags. 

Sienna Millar and the Olsen twins, Mary Kate and Ashley, popularized the boho-chic trend.

There are also celebrities who created their own look-Gwen Stefani for example. Mixed fashion from the past decades with modern styles. 

Another trend is the preppy look, which is a classic, neat look, collared, button-down shirts and loafers. Then, of course, there are trendy accessories, such as the Livestrong band, a yellow wristband developed by cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong. 

So, that’s the first decade of the century.  What’s going to happen in the second decade? For sure, trend spotters from clothing companies are watching Hollywood and MTV crowd to find out.
